Why losing weight is so hard in your 40's, 50’s, & 60's

Reduced metabolism as we get older is a major factor, particularly in women going through perimenopause and menopause.

Your body does not burn calories the way it did when you were younger, and your metabolism slows down as you age.

If you are still eating like you are 20 but exercising like you’re 80, you need to find the right balance of energy intake and output, along with the best food choices and other important component to help you lose weight.


1. Don’t skip meals:

Skipping meals, the proper way, also called intermittent fasting, can have incredible health benefits, like weight loss. But skipping a meal and intermittent fasting are two quite different things.

Sure, skipping meals can happen from time to time, but doing it consistently can negatively impact your health and lead to nutritional deficiencies. You are also not able to perform at your best because all you can focus on is food.


2. Aim for protein and fiber at each meal

These two nutrients most associated with satiety can help with not only weight loss but can support your digestive system.


3. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables

A diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables promotes weight loss and over all better health. Most vegetables are low in calories and fat, and high in fiber and various essential micronutrients, which makes them two of the best food options for successful weight loss.


4. Exercise regularly for muscle toning and strengthening

Do strength training, lifting small weights or using resistance bands a couple of days a week is important especially after the age of 50. (Remember not to overdo it, and make sure you stretch before any kind of exercise)


5. Eat more foods that are high in Phytoestrogens

These are dietary estrogens that are naturally occurring compounds found in plants, Health benefits including a lowered risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer, and menopausal symptoms


6. Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day minimum

Staying hydrated not only aids in weight loss but it improves the digestive system so that fats and toxins are eliminated form the body more efficiently, it can help with fluid retention and can help decrease appetite


7. Check your sweet habit

Trying to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle? Cutting sugar out or back will help incredibly. Your sugar obsession could be for many other reasons, and you may not know it but you could be deficient in different essential minerals such as magnesium, chromium and zinc, so that’s where increasing your vegetables and fruits that are naturally sweetened and can help with those cravings


8. Limit alcohol

Cutting down on alcohol can make weight loss a lot more effective. When you drink alcohol, your body focuses more on burning the calories in the alcohol rather than burning the fat in your body and this can cause delays in your weight loss


9. Get your sleep

Along with nutrition and exercise, good sleep is one of the pillars of health. Poor sleep is strongly linked to weight gain, heart disease and stroke. Poor sleep affects hormones that regulate appetite.

If you are getting enough sleep, it can help improve concentration and productivity, energy levels and helps with weight loss. Getting quality sleep is crucial.


10. Seek support.
