4 Things You Need to Know About Menopause & Skincare

skincare

I have always followed a strict skincare routine, inspired by my mother. Looking back, I realize I should have been more diligent with sunscreen, but who was in the past? Now that I am in my late 50s, it is more crucial than ever to prioritize it, which brings me to an important topic:

Menopause and skincare

Menopause marks a significant change in a woman's life, often bringing various physical and emotional adjustments. One noticeable change is in the skin, which can become drier, less elastic, and more susceptible to wrinkles due to hormonal changes.

Nonetheless, incorporating a thorough skincare routine, maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and utilizing appropriate supplements can ease this transition and support radiant, healthy skin.

A New Skin Care Regime

As I started going through "The Pause" in my early 40s and my estrogen levels were decreasing, I noticed my skin started losing its youthful radiance and elasticity. To combat these effects, I implemented a customized skincare regimen. Gentle cleansing, consistent exfoliation, and applying moisturizers helped maintain my skin's hydration and firmness. I choose non-toxic skincare products, avoiding the chemicals in many prominent brands that can disrupt the endocrine system.

Sunscreen became my daily essential, protecting my skin from UV rays to prevent additional damage and preserve its health.

The Role of a Healthy Diet

As a 20-year wellness & weight loss coach, I knew diet played a crucial role in my skin health, especially during menopause. I focused on consuming a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to nourish my skin from within. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, helped maintain my skin's lipid barrier, keeping it supple and hydrated. I incorporated plenty of fruits and vegetables, particularly those rich in vitamins A, C, and E, to combat oxidative stress and support skin repair. Reducing sugar intake is crucial, as excessive sugar can lead to glycation, damaging collagen and elastin in the skin.

Supplements for Skin Health

While a balanced diet and good hydration are foundational, I found that certain supplements provide additional support. Omega-3 supplements improved my skin barrier function and reduced inflammation. Collagen supplements, although debated, seemed to improve my skin elasticity and hydration when taken consistently. Vitamin D is one of the most overlooked vitamins for women over 50 for overall health, supporting bone health and immune function, especially during menopause.

Importance of Hydration

Hydration is another key aspect of maintaining healthy skin during menopause. Drinking plenty of water keeps my skin hydrated and helps flush out toxins. I aim for at least eight to ten glasses of water a day and incorporate hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges into my diet. Herbal teas and water-rich fruits and vegetables also contribute to my overall hydration. Proper hydration not only benefited my skin health but also improved my overall bodily functions, enhancing my energy levels and cognitive clarity.
